Starting at Maes Isfryn turn left down to the main road, carefully cross it, and walk up the few yards to the road on the left. called Bryn Eglur, passing the attractive houses then through gates onto a tarmac track which serves cyclists as well as walkers. Follow the track down to the metal gates at the bottom of the valley. |
Leg 2: Start of leg GR: SN589788
Turn left after the gate onto an unclassified road. Follow the road over the Ystwyth river bridge and after approximately 100 yards beyond the speed delimiting sign turn right signposted Tanybwlck |
Leg 3: Start of leg GR: SN588788
Walk down the track until you see the portal pillars to Plas Tanyvwlch. Above you on your left, at the top of the hill will be the old Norman castle of Aberystwyth. On your right you will see Pendinas hilltop and the monument to the Duke of Wellington in the form of a canon. Between the portal pillar and the boundary hedge of the bungalow is a footpath. |
Leg 4: Start of leg GR: SN582793
Follow this footpath down almost to the shoreline. The valley behind you was the course of a winding river Ystwyth to the sea before it was canalised to follow the northern end of this valley. As you arrive near the shoreline you will see a stile or gate to the steep path ascending to the clifftop. |
Leg 5: Start of leg GR: SN577796
Follow the path upwards, it will take you 15 minutes or so to get to the easier gradient which then takes you to the top of the cliff. This is the steepest part of the walk and which gives rise to its B grading. The path gradually gets less steep and when you think youve reached the end of this ascent then take a rest. |
Leg 6: Leg distance 1.1 mile(s) Start of leg GR: SN575788
Follow the path for about a mile or so through a number of styles and gates. Most of it is an undulating path along the clifftop. It eventually descends to green fields. As you enter into the third greenfield you will be at the corner of a caravan site. |
Leg 7: Start of leg GR: SN567775
At this entry into the third field turn sharp left up the slope to make for a post which you will see ahead by a small clump of willow trees. At the clump of trees, and the post, turn half right to continue up the grassy path, veering right after a short distance until you emerge at the tarmac road which leads down to the caravan site. |
Leg 8: Start of leg GR: SN568772
Turn left at the tarmac road and after about 10 yards turn right to go over a stile. Go straight up the slope in front of you, walk across the field following the path down into a shallow re-entrant Valley and then upwards turning right across the ditch to meet a stile onto the tarmac track. |
Leg 9: Start of leg GR: SN571770
Follow the tarmac track up and around until you reach the marked entrance portal to the Morfa Bychan caravan site. Just afterwards you will see a track going off to your right. Follow the track and approximately 100 yards after passing, on the right, the house named Llety Gegin, you will see a stle up on the left of the track. |
Leg 10: Start of leg GR: SN569767
Cross the stile and ascend this steepish slope into the field and after perhaps 100 yards veer left up the shallow valley to the fence ahead of you. When you reach it you will need to go right perhaps 50 yards, to find the stile into the next field. |
Leg 11: Start of leg GR: SN571767
Cross the stile and walk down the shallow drive valley in front of you to a fence. On reaching the fence turn right to go about 1 3rd Way up the slope to a stile possibly hidden behind some gorse bushes. |
Leg 12: Start of leg GR: SN572767
Cross the stile and turn right to follow the path. The fence is at first on your right but then the path crosses the fence so that it is then on your left and then disappears altogether. Nevertheless keep following the path around till it comes to a style alongside the unclassified road. Cross the road and you will see a stile immediately ahead of you. |
Leg 13: Start of leg GR: SN573767
Cross the stile into a field, keeping the hedge immediately on your left. After 200 yards look for a style on your left, over the hedge. Cross the stile and walk down keeping the hedge and fence on your right, go through the stile at the bottom of the field and proceed downwards crossing the watercourse by means of the culvert which you will see towards your left. Turn right after crossing the culvert, walk along the watercourse to emerge at the main road A487 at Rhydgaled, also known as Chancery |
Leg 14: Start of leg GR: SN580767
Carefully cross the busy A487 and behind the wall in front of you you will see a pleasant path going down alongside a stream. Follow the past down and then upwards past a house on your left just after which you will come to a metal gate leading to a farm road. |
Leg 15: Start of leg GR: SN582765
Turn left after going through the metal gate, walk down the farm road, turn left when you meet the unclassified road until just before the bridge over the stream you will see a metal gate on your right. |
Leg 16: Start of leg GR: SN585768
Go through the metal gate and follow the path, with the stream on its left, to walk down through charming woodlands with in spring a massive carpeting of anemones. Follow the path on over two footbridges, past some evocative old cottages, to arrive at the A485. |
Leg 17: Start of leg GR: SN590774
Cross the A4852 the opposite verge and turn left walking the few yards until it meets the A487. Turn right along the pavement and then the verge, cross the road bridge over the river Ystwyth and turn right up the steps immediately after the bridge. At the top of the steps turn left to walk back to your start point on Maes Isfryn. We hope you enjoyed your walk. |
